Formed as the Genealogical Society of Tasmania in 1980, the Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. now has four branches, of which Hobart is the largest. It exists to promote and support the study and research of family history, to preserve and transcribe records, to publish appropriate literature and to provide members with a high-quality reference library and learning opportunities. The Hobart Branch is emerging as a local leader in integrating DNA matching into family history research.
A unique and extensive library includes a wide range of fully catalogued printed matter, micro-form and CD-ROM records and a range of research tools. Many of our records are not available on the internet, some are exclusive. The emphasis is on Australian, New Zealand and UK records. Members also have access to Ancestry.com within our library.
Members receive our quality quarterly journal, free access to our library resources where expert assistance is available and can choose to attend monthly meetings with guest speakers. Paid research (by our volunteers at a very reasonable rate) supports all members but particularly those who are unable to visit our library.
This web site provides an overview of our branch and its resources and how to access them. It includes an up to date list of coming events and enables users to browse, and order from, the wide range of publications we offer for sale.
