FamilySearch is a major genealogy site with a very impressive record collection, spanning over five billion documents, photos and more and is continually growing at a rapid rate. That’s fewer records than Ancestry.com or MyHeritage, but it's still a massive amount and, unlike the others, FamilySearch is totally free to use, as it's owned and funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
There is a vast number of images freely available from FamilySearch which can otherwise only be accessed through pay sites. There is one drawback and that is the legal conditions under which FamilySearch has been granted access to copy and index records mean that copies of many original images are only available by physically attending FamilySearch Libraries (there is just one in Tasmania) or an accredited affiliate library.
That is where we come in because Hobart Branch is the first FamilySearch affiliate library in Tasmania. While we are still learning all the benefits ourselves both members and visitors can now access all those locked images that previously required a visit to the FamilySearch Centre.
When you visit our library you will need to login to Familysearch using your username and password using one of our computers.
