Swing Rioters Beneath the Southern Cross

Agricultural labourers transported to Australia after the 1830's rural riots

Acknowledgments

I am especially indebted to Jill Chambers who, fifteen years ago, made me aware of the existence of the Swing riots (and the Swing-rioters) while I was pondering the discovery that one of my great great grandparents, John East, had been transported for 'Machine Breaking'.

The late Roma Draper gave help with numerous Wiltshire Swing-rioters, Elizabeth Garnett and John Chance with Huntingdonshire men, Kaye Gloucestershire men and Kevin Green with Swing-rioters from East Anglia and elsewhere. Steve Pearsall helped with John Tollard and gave invaluable assistance and Frances Parsons, who is descended from three Swing-rioters, helped with the Hillier, Wadley and Snook(s) families. Joseph Ring provided information about his great grand-uncle, also named Joseph Ring, and Anne Goddard Jackson gave information about William (K)nibbs.

I also wish to thank:

I apologise if I have neglected to acknowledge any other person who provided information about any Swing-rioter transported to Australia.
