Join us for an illustrated talk by Peter Hodge on the history of Legacy which was founded in 1923 in Hobart as the Remembrance Club by Major General Sir John Gellibrand and later renamed Hobart Legacy.

Born in Queensland and educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School, Peter worked in schools for 36 years as a teacher and school principal. He has a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Tasmania and is currently studying an arts degree in "Ancient Civilizations".

Maree's Mutterings

On a visit to the Libraries Tasmania today, I have found everything has changed in the microfilm area. Microfilms and readers have been moved out and the area into the reference library and the microform room is becoming an exhibition area.

The Z films (Church registers, Early Government records, MM films and goodness knows what else) are now housed in the Archives room (inter-sanctum) and you will need to ask for them at the reference desk. I was told that they will get them as soon as they can, so let's hope you aren't in a hurry, and they aren't busy.

The readers are in the reference section (in at least two places) and fewer than they were before. Grrr

As the newspapers are now on Trove, they are only keeping those reels for the newspaper -Mercury, Examiner and Advocate - post Trove from 1955. I noticed PWD microfilms are in another place near some readers. These reels are all now in the reference section.

Apparently, staff are still learning, and it might take a while to get what is needed.

I guess we have been spoilt when we were able to help ourselves!

DNA Interest Group

When the DNA Interest Group started seven or eight years ago everyone was feeling their way and unsure of the best way to use DNA matching, let alone integrate it into business as usual genealogy. Ancestry, which is now the major provider, didn't even offer DNA testing in Australia back then.

But there have been massive strides in the technology and how to use it. Today members of our Interest Group range from beginners like we all were, to people who are capable of routinely making quite remarkable discoveries.

We are currently seeking feedback from those who have attended our meetings as we try and balance these issues and ensure they continue to be relevant and useful. If you have not received a survey but would like to offer some feedback in terms of what would (or would not) help or interest you please drop a note to our Convenors at dna@hobart.tasfhs.org.

Anonymous is fine.

The Interest Group meets at 1.30 pm on the third Thursday of each month at St Marks Church Hall, Bellerive. All are welcome.

Family Album - Enlighten 2023 at the National Library

Just as a treasured photo album captures and preserves memories and moments in time, the National Library of Australia's vast photographic collection represents the family album of a nation.

Reflect on the special moments - how we have changed, how we have grown, and perhaps see a glimpse of your Australian story projected on your National Library.

Learn more about the Library's Enlighten 2023 illuminations, watch the video.

With more than a million photographs of Australian people, places, and events, the Library holds snapshots of the hard times, the good, and everything in between. Our Enlighten 2023 illuminations use this collection to follow life through birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing. They acknowledge the diversity of individual, family and community experiences, as well as the enormous social change seen in Australia since the invention of photography, and particularly over the last 50 years.

Many of the images featured in the projections also form part of the exhibition Viewfinder: Photography from the 1970s to Now on show at the Library until 30 April 2023.

Libraries Tasmania - Delve into Ann's Diaries

Are you interested in what women's lives were like two hundred years ago?

The first Friends of the Allport (FOTA) event this year, Kate Vermey: The Jane Austen-esque diaries of Mary Morton Allport's Mother, is on at the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, Tuesday 21 March from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Join Kate Vermey (Libraries Tasmania) as she takes a journey through the family life of Ann Frances Chapman (nee Evett), mother of Mary Morton Allport, and the daily struggles, joys and losses of the 1830s.

The in-person event is booked out - register for the webinar instead.

Keep an eye out for future events on the State Library, Tasmanian Archives and Allport Museum Eventbrite page.

Women Gather to Honour Achievers - Tas Honour Roll of Women

The Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women is a significant recognition of the dedication, commitment, and hard work of many Tasmanian women.

In 2023, 35 women and one women's organisation are inducted onto the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women.

The inductees were announced by the Minister for Women, Hon Jo Palmer MLC.

Some of the inductees are leaders in their chosen careers, some have achieved international recognition whilst others are quiet achievers and volunteers who have made a significant contribution to their communities and Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women started in 2005 to recognise women who have made a significant contribution to Tasmania, or nationally or internationally. Induction ceremonies are held biannually.
